Sarah Palin

Reports coming in that it's going to be her. It shouldn't be that much of a surprise considering how successful the dem convention was. This will complicate the campaign in many fascinating ways, like, isn't the whole point of a VP pick that they're ready to be president if, for example, your older-than-the-pyramids nominee happens to expire a month into his term? She's been governor for two years of...Alaska. Population: 10,000 elk, 1,500 Inuit. The struggles she's had to overcome in this unwieldy state with a diverse population and a massive budget of...right. The Republicans sure love them some tokenism. How many ladies are gonna buy this? That said, she's wildly popular in Alaska, a true reformist, pro-life, a killer of pork (she ended the whole Bridge-to-Nowhere debacle) and a maverick who beat the Republican party's choice in the Alaskan primaries. What a great way for the Republicans to control the news cycle and minimize the importance of Barack's solid speech last night. She'll be dangerous.

Governor Palin's credentials or lack thereof belie McCain's diatribe on Obama's lack of experience in foreign policy and "national" security. Hmmm, a heartbeat away. What is meant by experience anyway. In 2000, the GOP candidate lacked substantive experience and success having occupied a known ceremonial office as governor of Texas. He, nonetheless, captured the presidential election that year and surrounded himself with foreign policy experts of many stripes. This cabal of experts brought the USA 2 wars, corruption, ineptitude in emergency management, global isolation from our historical allies, bankruptcy, collapse of the housing markets, and tremendous debt. The list goes on...who now can afford a university education and how many years will it take for the average college graduate to repay ever mounting educational debt. Its 200,000 dollars to graduate from Harvard University; and nearly $100,000 to graduate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison as a resident. How in the world can anyone finance such catastrophic expenses and expect to earn a decent living?

Let's not even discuss the emergence of the surveillance society in America. Who is the real enemy? Is it you, is it I? When is the last time TSA pulled you or someone you know aside for secondary screening because your name appeared on a do-not-fly or watch list. TSA/DHS doesn't even make the effort to investigate misrepresentations. Americans are equally suspect in this post-9/11 world. But how effective are these techniques of brute surveillance and when will it end.

As Obama said last night, this election is not about me, it's about you. Think about that when you vote and think hard.

I totally disagree Grizz. She's a lightweight, firmly right-wing social conservative. Dems weren't ever going to win b/c the right flank abandoned McCain, so this shoring up of the right accomplishes little. And women don't vote for women just because -- esp. not when they are firmly pro-life and anti-gay rights. Quayle. Mondale. Desperate picks don't have a favorable history...and this is as desperate as it comes.

I hope you're right my fair Bruskino, but McCain has energized the Republican base and took in double his highest fundraising tally after the announcement of Palin. Conservatives love her, and she's clearly going to increase social conservative turnout this election. Agreed, her appeal to independents is, as of yet, unknown.
